Spring 2014 Architecture Studio | Sugar Shack in Downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota
At the current site of St Paul's Landmark Plaza, this project integrates a communal sugar shack within an urban context. The sugaring harvest for syrup takes place in February and March. My proposed building sinks into the plaza keeping a percentage of the roof habitable and functional for events and circulation without obstructing views of the surrounding, classic architecture. A whiskey distillery also requires a large open building to process and store. A sunken outdoor garden is where the evaporating process takes place for the maple sugar.
